NWA 032 Lunar Mare Basalt Meteorite Slice - 3.3g
The lunar maria are large, dark, basaltic plains on Earth's Moon, formed by ancient asteroid impacts on the far side on the Moon that triggered volcanic activity on the opposite (near) side. They were dubbed maria, Latin for 'seas,' by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas. Recent research suggests that this unique mare basalt crystallized just 2.8 billion years ago, providing evidence for a prolonged lunar volcanism and making this one of the youngest lunar basalts analyzed so far. This piece was found in Morocco not far from the boarder of Algeria back in October of 1999. Only 300 grams of this material was recovered. This is one of the rarest and highly coveted lunars out there. Very few people actually have a piece of it in their collections.
The weight of this piece is 3.3 grams.
The measurements are about 28x22x2mm.
