Darwin Glass from Tasmania Australia 3.79g Individual Impact Glass
Darwin glass is an impactite. It’s a glass made up of a part of the earth’s crust that melted when an iron meteorite crashed into western Tasmania almost one million years ago. This impact generated a large amount of energy (enough to melt the crust, picture probably the equivalent of several atomic bombs), and created the Darwin Crater. Many craters around the world have glass which formed from the heat of the impact. But, the Mount Darwin Crater has glass which is quite different. Instead of being a black glass it is a grayish green. It is found with folds and twists as well as masses the look like large drops. Darwin glass is truly one of the most interesting of the impact melt glasses available to collectors.
