Bondoc Nodule Polished End Cut 14.53g

This is what we call a Bondoc nodule.  It has been professionally sliced in half, polished and stabilized.  Most of the meteorite has weathered away leaving behind these large metal nodules.  The Bondoc meteorite is a mesosiderite with a fascinating story surrounding its recovery. It may have been known for a long time but its formal recognition as a meteorite occurred approximately in 1956. It was then that H. H. Nininger realized that it was meteoritic and not low-grade iron ore of some type as many individuals in the Philippines were reporting. It actually took 3 1/2 years for Nininger to acquire the 1955-pound stone from the jungle and get it to Sedona, Arizona. But what a special meteorite it is. It has large metal nodules besides the normal mixture of metal and mineral common to mesosiderites. Some small pieces are nearly metal free while others are nearly solid metal.
